REV. WILHELM GOTTLOB MAUCH: 1928-1932

The Mauch family moved from a church in Mishawaka, Indiana to Dexter where the Rev. Mauch became pastor of St. Andrews on December l, 1928.

The early life of the Rev. Mauch was written in a letter by his son Theodore when St. Andrews celebrated one-hundred years as Follows: "My father was known as Rev. W.G. Mauch, his full name was Wilhelm Gottlob, born in Rosswag Germany and at age five was in the Orphan Home in Stuttgart. Ice cold sheets and bucket showers, but excellent education. tie had to learn German hymns and long passages in German literature. He became an expert in various South-German dialects. When fifteen years old he came to Elmhurst College. His first two churches were in Payette, Idaho and Portland, Oregon. About 1917 he shifted to Iowa where in Nashua he married Emma Karoline Meier while he was minister in Garretson, South Dakota".

A short time after arriving in Dexter the small frame German schoolhouse was removed and Pastor Mauch planted a large flower bed on the site. Each member of the church was sent a mimeographed monthly parish paper during his pastorate. His wife served as organist while in Dexter. The family left St. Andrews in February 1932 to go to Rogers Corners.

The Rev. Mauch retired in 1960 after fifty-one years in the ministry. He died in 1969 at his home on Cape Cod that the family had purchased after he retired. The oldest son, Herbert preceded him in death in 1961 following a stroke. The youngest son, Theodore earned a Doctor of Theology degree and for many years taught historical and interpretive study of the Bible.
