REV. ALBERT ANTON SCHOEN 1932-1941

The Rev. Schoen came to St. Andrews in April 1932 from Man­chester, Michigan where he had served for seventeen years.

In September 1932 he started the weekly publication "The Sunday Visitor." A choir and the Brotherhood were reorganized shortly after he came to Dexter. During 1938 the church building was remodeled and completely redecorated, a pipe organ was installed a new altar with a carving of the Lords Supper, a new pulpit and lectern were donated as memorials. Later a baptismal font was given as a memorial.

The Rev. Schoen was born October 12, 1871 in Freedom Township the son of Anton and Christina Beutler Schoen. Following attend­ance in a country school, he attended two years in a confirmation school at the age of twelve. Later he attended Elmhurst College for five years. Pastor Schoen was ordained on June 25, 1893 at his home church, Bethel in Freedom Township.

He was married to Bertha Charlotte Polk of Dayton, Ohio in 1911. Three years later she died. In October 191'7 he was married to Hannah Eisen Koffberger, whose first husband had died after

four years of marriage leaving her with a daughter, Hedwig. Mrs. Schoen served as organist and choir director at St. Andrews for a number of years. She was the daughter of former St. Andrews pastor, Gottlieb Eisen and his wife Albertine.

Pastor Schoen and his wife Hannah had a son, Victor Herbert, who was ordained at St. Andrews on June 14, 1944 and went on to serve churches in Ohio and Indiana. Pastor Schoen retired in 1941 after forty-eight years in the ministry. He died September 30, 19`;2 and Hannah Schoen on December 25, 1977. Both are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea.
